Donald Lamont, who chairs the Governors Boarding Committee said: “We are very proud of our outstanding boarding provision.

“This was a unique opportunity for boarders and staff to show off our facilities and explain their experience of boarding at Steyning, which they did with characteristic enthusiasm.”

Headteacher Nick Wergan escorted the Duchess, Birgitte, into the newest of the boarding houses, Bolton House, to meet members of staff.

Director of Boarding Danielle Cook said: “Students and staff were delighted to showcase our boarding facility, in particular Bolton House which opened in 2012. Boarding students from Years nine to 13 were keen to share how they have built friendships and memories in this special vibrant and culturally diverse environment.”

The tour also included a visit to the Church Street, Lower School site to watch a clay modelling workshop with Year 7 pupils and a journalism workshop held in one of the oldest parts of the school, Brotherhood Hall, originally a merchant Guild Hall dating back to 1461.

Before departing Mr Wergan introduced the director of Key Stage 3 Jo Clear and a posy was presented by Sixth Form boarder Emma Waldron.

Mrs Clear said: “The students were thrilled to show their work to Her Royal Highness and to explain why the Steyning Downlands Scheme is such a special place for the local community.

“This will be a day the students will remember for the rest of their lives.”
