The draft Joint Minerals Local Plan, drawn up by West Sussex County Council and the South Downs National Park Authority, suggests turning farmland at Ham Farm into a sand quarry.

The draft plan says that 850,000 tonnes of soft sand - used to make mortar - could be excavated from the site and taken away by road.

It concludes that using Ham Farm for this is ‘acceptable in principle’, although it acknowledges that the benefits for the local economy must be balanced against the effects on health, the historic environment, and air quality.

The proposals will be on display at Coombe Court, The Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning, from 3pm to 8pm on Monday May 23.

West Sussex County Council officers will be available to discuss the draft plan.
