A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said closing the roads overnight is the ‘safest option’.

He said: “The resurfacing work is being carried out due to the condition of the roads.

“It’s a narrow lane with access through the village for buses, the library, local business and schools.

“The safety of the public and our contractors is paramount and, on this occasion, closing the road and carrying out the work overnight is simply the safest option.

“Also, by doing the work out of normal hours we hope to be able to complete it faster.

“We apologise for any inconvenience.”
