Steyning parish praise emergency services for airshow disaster work

A one-minute silence was held prior to the meeting, called by councillor Tim Lloyd.

Mr Barling said nothing could have prepared police, firefighters and paramedics for what they found on August 22, when a Hawker Hunter crashed onto the A27, claiming 11 lives.

He said: “I just wanted to record how much we all owe to our services – by God they do a fantastic job when the chips are down!

“Our firefighters were on the scene very quickly.

“One retained fire engine from Worthing was there within one minute because by chance it was coming down the A24 and they 
were faced with an apocalyptic scene with terrible carnage.

“All our emergency services were tested and they were not found wanting.”

On August 30, the eastbound carriageway towards Brighton, along with one lane on the westbound carriageway, were reopened for the public but the westbound lane remains closed while investigations continue.

Mr Barling said: “You would have noticed that the road is only partly reopened and screened off, this is because police are still combing what’s beyond and they will be doing that at least for another week or two.

“I’m very keen that the road reopens, but it is important that the police finish their job.”

As cabinet member for resident services, emergency services are a major part of Mr Barling’s portfolio.

Following the meeting, he told the Herald he was very proud of how the Steyning community had come together to show its support after the incident.

He said: “A lot of people in Steyning have talked to me about it.

“All of them were greatly concerned and sympathetic to the plight of the victims and their families.

“I feel very proud that people have shown strong community spirit.”

Steyning Fire Station in the High Street is to hold an open day on Monday, September 14, at 6pm.

The official Shoreham Airshow disaster fund has reached £50,000.
