Visitors will have the opportunity to ponder the mysteries of cakes made with white wine from a 1705 recipe, of how a farming family made boiled puddings in 1750, and what suggestions were made for recipes for poor households in 1826.

There is also a selection of more or less unappetising recipes of cures for a wide range of maladies to wonder at.

There will also be a challenging quiz, ‘Food, Drink and Shopping’ to take part in.

Those who successfully complete the challenge can take away a copy of one of the old recipes.

Steyning and District Food and Drink Festival began on Saturday and runs until October 4.

Celebrity headliners this year include the famous wine expert, Oz Clarke, on September 22, and actress and winner of last year’s Celebrity MasterChef, Sophie Thompson, on October 1.
