Steyning landmark faces the chop

PERCY the peregrine falcon could be for the chop after being caught shirking his responsibilities.

The plastic bird of prey has become something of a landmark in Steyning, and has watched over the High Street from his lofty perch for almost two years.

He was flown over from Italy to scare pigeons away from Chanctonbury Butchers, in a bid to discourage birds from doing their business near the shop. Until recently, he had been doing a sterling job.

The Herald had Percy under surveillance after receiving a tip-off he had been under-performing.

And as our picture, above, shows, he seems to have made feathered friends out of his once sworn enemies.

Michael Davis, of Chanctonbury Butchers, admitted the bird had every right to be in a flap and needed to be kept on his toes '“ or should that be talons?
