Steyning football match in honour of cancer victim

A CHARITY football match in memory of a friend who died from cancer has helped raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

The annual Ivan Mitchell Memorial Trophy was played at Steyning Town Football Club on Sunday, June 26, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and St Barnabas House hospice.

The match took place in memory of Ivan Mitchell, formerly of Worthing, who lost his fight against cancer in July, 2007, at the age of 32.

This year’s match was played between Steyning Old Boys and a group of women from Brighton and Hove Albion who volunteered their services.

The final score was 4-2 to Steyning Old Boys.

Organiser Matt Bailey said: “The match was played in a good spirit in front of a crowd of around 100 and there was a raffle in the clubhouse afterwards.

“I would like to thank the ladies for volunteering to play in the game and also Steyning Town Football Club for providing the facilities free of charge. I am sure everyone who attended will agree it was a fantastic day.”

The event has raised £700, although organisers hope to hit the £1,000 mark when the rest of the money is collected.
