The ‘log jam’, in a culvert under the road in Shooting Field, had sent water gushing out over the weekend.

West Sussex County Council staff worked on Saturday to clear the six-inch branch, which was causing a pile-up of debris in the culvert, but it was stuck fast.

The Environment Agency was also at the scene, pumping the water to bypass the blockage and clear the road of water while a specialist clearance team was put into place.

David Barling, county councillor for Bramber Castle, said: “The problem was satisfactorily resolved yesterday, when West Sussex County Council staff managed to remove the log and clear the culvert, in miserable weather conditions.

“They also managed to patch up and repair the surface of the road, which had been damaged as a result of the water penetration.”

He said he wanted to thank the highways team and Environment Agency staff for all they did over a period of five days.

“It cannot have been any fun at all dealing with this in wet and windy weather,” he said.

“The road was not only kept open but the damaged surface was patched the same day.”

He said the stream, which runs beside Tanyard Lane, had flooded before, but never to such a magnitude, or in the same way.
