Spring show narcissi exceed expectations

GREEN-fingered gardeners exceeded all expectations by producing a host of golden daffodils for the Beeding and Bramber Horticultural Society spring show on Saturday.

Organisers had been wondering whether there would be enough narcissi available to make a spring show worthwhile, due to the weather, but society members came up trumps and found sufficient flowers to put on an excellent display at Beeding and Bramber Village Hall, in High Street, Upper Beeding.

A constant stream of visitors turned up to enjoy the flowers on display, as well as the cakes, plants and refreshments for sale.

The cups were presented by society chairman Graham Drawbridge.

The Spring Show Cup, for the competitor gaining the most points in the show, was won by Tony Hills, who also won the Vincent Cup for the best exhibit.

Alan Baker, the society’s president, won the Hilda Phillips Cup for the best entry in class nine – nine perfect blooms of daffodils of one variety, something which is not easy to achieve.

Committee member Pat Nightingale said it was disappointing that no children had entered exhibits in their section and there were no entrants in the classes for floral art.

However, a new competitor, Gillian Woodrow, won the Saltings Cup for her photography.
