Speed device for Clays Hill supported

Bramber Parish Council chairman Roger Potter has been looking at ways do reduce speeds and suggested sharing the cost with Upper Beeding and Steyning parish councils.

Mike Croker visited Bramber’s December meeting to report on the effectiveness of the devices, with a portable SiD costing £2,800 and secondhand gun £1,000.

Mr Croker said findings showed speeds tended to be lower during speed-check periods but then increased again.

Storrington Parish Council advised the councils should not under estimate the effort required from volunteers.

PCSO Tom Slaughter backed up the need for volunteers and agreed a Speed Watch initiative would help.

Steyning Parish Council agreed last Monday to share the cost of a gun, in principle, but to get more detail on maintenance costs and legal issues for operators before final approval.

Sgt Robert Trevis told the councils he advised against an SiD device but out of the two, he would prefer the portable gun, as long as there were volunteers prepared to use it.

Bramber councillor Matthew Bengough-Drake said the 30mph sign at the roundabout was still not sited correctly and there had been eight or nine accidents on Clays Hill in the last seven years.

Bramber Parish Council agreed to talk to West Sussex County Council about the siting of the sign at the roundabout and other traffic calming measures.
