PUPILS at a Shoreham school had a treat when the author of children’s classic Old Bear, Jane Hissey, paid them a visit last week.

Year-one teacher at St Nicolas and St Mary CE Primary School, Mrs Katie Westcott, said the children had really enjoyed the visit.

“It was absolutely brilliant,” she said.

“It was so nice to have a local author in who is so famous. It’s quite a rare thing for the school to have authors come in so it was a real treat.”

Jane showed the children the original teddy bears used to illustrate her stories, explained to them how a book was made, and read them some of her stories.

“I used to love them when I was younger,” said Mrs Westcott.

Jane’s beautifully illustrated picture books have been loved by children around the world for more than 25 years.

Year one have been using her first book, Old Bear, which was published in 1986, in their literacy lessons. The book is considered a new children’s classic.

Since then, Jane has gone on to write and illustrate more than 20 more picture books including Little Bear Lost, Jolly Snow, Jolly Tall and Ruff, as well as creating an award-winning animated TV series of Old bear stories.
