Sixth Formers named winners in debate competition regional finals

Two Sixth Formers from The Angmering School have been named the winners of the Regional Finals of the English Speaking Union Mace Debate competition.

Arran Collis, 18, and Flynn Hickey, 17, competed against Charterhouse School, Winchester College and Royal Grammar School, Guildford, before being awarded the top spot.

Their motion debated was for the legislation of buying and selling of human organs.

Arran said: “I am proud to have finally won such a prestigious competition and to represent the school.”

Flynn said: “I was so excited to win.

“I really enjoyed the experience and am so happy our hard work has been recognised.”

Arran has been debating since he was in Year Nine, and Flynn joined the debate team in Year 10.

They work with the younger students in school at debate club, and meet weekly to practice for the competitions they enter.

Arran and Flynn will now go on to compete in the Nationals, which will take place in London on Wednesday, March 16.
