The festival’s first-ever pop song section took place on Friday night, in which there were ‘some great performances’.

Saturday’s programme began with performances from the youngest age groups before giving way to Disney songs in the evening – with the performance area decorated with balloons, pictures and lights.

On Sunday afternoon, the singing section came to an end with a ‘colourful finale’ as the costumed show songs took centre stage. The afternoon concluded with a small ensemble singing and dancing to the music of Barnum.

Jan Spooner-Swabey, festival secretary, said: “The tone was set by our marvellous adjudicator Sarah Jefferies, who just loves every minute of it. Her sense of fun and enjoyment was transmitted to all of the performers whatever their age and lead to some amazing performances. The whole weekend saw large audiences who were delighted, moved and entertained in equal measures, and as always Field Place is one of the most welcoming venues in our town.”

The speech and drama sections have also taken place this week. Entrants had to read a piece of prose, a solo verse and perform a solo piece of drama.

The finals for the singing section will take place from 2pm on Sunday, held jointly with the speech and drama section finals, in the Barn Theatre, in Field Place.
