Short story competition for students

YOUNG writers in Adur are again being urged to pick up their pens, following the success of a new short story competition.

Cllr Peter Metcalfe launched the competition last year, when he was Adur Council chairman, as part of Shoreham WordFest.

He encouraged young writers to pen short stories and the competition was a resounding success, with more than 100 entries.

Cllr Mike Mendoza, current Adur chairman, is delighted to continue the association with Shoreham Wordfest.

He is supporting a writing competition for primary and secondary pupils, and invites contributions from all schools in the Adur district.

This year’s theme for primary schools is Strange Creatures, linking with the 2014 Adur Festival artwork competition. There will be two categories, infants aged five to seven and juniors aged eight to 11, with a maximum word limit of 200 for infants and 300 for juniors.

The theme for the secondary school competition will be Local Lives, with entries being organised by Shoreham Academy, Sir Robert Woodard Academy and Lancing College.

Shortlisted entries will go to a panel of poets and authors before a prize-giving ceremony on World Book Night, April 23, at Sir Robert Woodard Academy.
