SHOREHAM vicar the Rev Ann Waizeneker has been appointed a canon at Chichester Cathedral.

The Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner, announced the appointment of six new canons earlier this month.

Ms Waizeneker is Priest-in-Charge at St Mary de Haura Church in Shoreham town centre and the Church of the Good Shepherd, on Shoreham Beach.

She is also deputy chairman of the Diocesan European Ecumenical Committee and a member of Diocesan Synod.

The title of canon is usually offered to a priest or lay person in recognition of particular service to the diocese or wider church.

With the new appointments, Bishop Martin has recognised the contribution each has made to the apostolic life of the diocese and the award will be marked by a special service in the cathedral.

Each of the new canons will be designated a stall in Chichester Cathedral and will become members of the Greater Chapter of Chichester Cathedral, which sometimes meets with the residentiary canons who work in the Cathedral every day.

Dr Warner said: “I am delighted to welcome those announced as canons of Chichester Cathedral.

“Each of them has made a distinctive contribution to the life and work of the diocese in a variety of ways and I hope that the wider diocese will pray for them as we welcome them to this new aspect of their ministry.”

Members of the congregations at St Mary de Haura Church said prayers for Ms Waizeneker in her new role at Sunday’s Eucharist.

Three of the installations, including Ms Waizeneker, will take place at Evensong at Chichester Cathedral on September 19 at 5.30pm. The others will be October 11.
