Shoreham soldier dies in Afghanistan

Lance Corporal James Brynin of the Intelligence Corps was killed in action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on Tuesday

The 22-year-old was working as an intelligence analyst for 14th Signal Regiment and had been selected for promotion but was killed yesterday when his patrol was attacked in the Helmand province.

Despite immediate medical treatment he died from his injuries at the scene.

James Brynin was born in Shoreham in 1990 and joined the Army in February 2011.

Paying tribute to L/Cpl Brynin, Ministry of Defence (MoD), said that he was immediately identified as a bright, motivated, self-starter and had already been selected for promotion to corporal.

Known as ‘Jay’ to friends and family, he had already served a tour in Afghanistan in 2012 and had “grand ambitions”.

His family paid the following tribute: “Heart of a lion, we will always stand strong for you. We will never forget. Rest in peace.”

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Purves, Royal Signals, Commanding Officer 14th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare), said: “A member of a small and specialist cadre, his selfless sacrifice to those around him typifies his commitment and unflinching bravery. He will, forever, be remembered with pride by his regimental family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jay’s parents, his close family and friends at this difficult time.”
