She will also bring up the issue at the Adur County Local Committee at St Peter’s RC Primary School, in Sullington Way, Shoreham, on Thursday, June 26, at 7pm.

Parents Andrew and Tamsin Holmes called the public meeting over concerns for safety crossing the road.

They want to pelican crossings, one near Freehold Street and another at the northern end of the road, to help people using the Downs Link path.

Mr Loughton said various attempts had been made to improve safety but the problem had become worse, with more people using the riverside walk and more vehicles using the road.

Safety was the prime concern but the actual accident rate was low, so he advised money from developers would help ‘bump it up the action list’.

A small working group is being set up and a ‘round table’ discussion will be organised with highways officers , to look at everything from actual crossings and lights to better warning signage. Talks will also be held with businesses in a bid to encourage lorry drivers to use an alternative route.
