Shoreham Fort revamp hears call to remove coastguard hut

At a full meeting of Adur District Council councillors called on the port authority to remove the old tower.

They said the disused structure was damaging a “valuable heritage site”.

Asking for the removal, the council said: “The remains are preventing access and restoration to the western magazine section, which lies beneath it.

“Adur District Council supports Gary Baines and the Friends of Shoreham Fort in their aims to raise funds and restore the fort to its historical value for the education and enjoyment of local residents and visitors.”

The council’s support prompted Gary Baines, founder of the Friends of Shoreham Fort, to apply for permission to use the Adur logo on the group’s website, Facebook site and in conjunction with a cannon firing event to mark the beginning of the Adur Festival.

Mr Baines has been working with a team of volunteers to restore the fort on Shoreham Beach to its former glory.

Jeremy Cook, head of legal and democratic services, has recommended Mr Baines be granted permission to use the logo until the end of 2011, subject to health and safety requirements on the cannon firing.

Council leader, Neil Parkin, is set to make a decision in January.
