Shoreham Fort making trench, not bunker

ADUR District Council has apologised for an error in its Pot of Gold information, which has caused confusion at Shoreham Fort.

The Herald reported last week the Friends of Shoreham Fort had been awarded £10,000 to construct a replica world war one ‘bunker’ in time for the commemorations.

The information was supplied by the council and was also avaiable on its website.

Friends chairman Gary Baines was quick to point out there were no bunkers in world war one. The Friends are in fact creating a training trench. It will be started on August 3, the day before the centenary of the date Great Britain entered the war.

Friends secretary Sharon Penfold said: “I just hope the residents of Shoreham Beach don’t end up in uproar because they think we’re putting a bunker at the fort – the last thing we need is to upset the locals who have been so supportive of us.”

The council said the error was due to lack of understanding and apologised for any problems it had caused.

See next week’s Herald for a special feature on the fort.
