Gap-year student Jaime said people living in Western Road were told not to leave their houses while officers examined the devices.

She added:"No-one was evacuated in the end, as the bombs were safe for removal. The bomb squad took away about 20 different bombs, all varying in size and shape."

The street was open to the public at around 1.30pm, although two police officers remained guarding an alleyway.

It is believed council workers had been clearing a house in the street when they came across the unexploded devices.
