Shoreham Beach Primary School went the extra mile on Friday with fundraising for Sport Relief.

Every class in the school, from reception to year six, ran a mile along the board walk on Shoreham Beach and back.

Year-one teacher Coco Swanson said: “It was wonderful to see because every child really went for it and instead of being focused on who was the fastest and who beat who, it was all about looking out for your friends.

“We saw children stop running and go back to support their less-speedy peers. We all cheered each other on and the atmosphere was great.”

It was a cold morning on the beach but the children and staff, dressed sporting outfits ranging from ballerina dresses to karate gis, found the energy to beat the weather.

Pupils had also taken in cakes for a Great Shoreham Beach Bake off, where there were prizes for creativity and taste.

Teaching assistant Lucy Bennett spent the afternoon tasting the cakes and was impressed with the quality.

“The designs were amazing and so imaginative,” she said.

“It was really difficult to decide. The tastes were wonderful, ranging from chocolate and pear muffins to tangerine cookies.”

After the winners had been announced, all the cakes were cut up and sold off to parents and children in a frenzied cake sale.

Staff said it had been a great day and the pupils had obviously been enthused by a film about children who have to earn money litter picking in Bangladesh.

Iris Carter, ten, said: “Children’s lives are so much harder in Bangladesh than ours. We are so lucky to be safe and have all the privileges that we have in the England. It makes me happy that I can help.”

The run and cake sale raised a grand total of £685.17.
