Health bosses have moved neurosurgery to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton from Hurstwood Park in Haywards Heath, to form part of the Major Trauma Centre.

The move was organised by bosses at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust, (BSUH), which runs both hospitals and took place at the weekend (June 20-21).

The trust hope more patients will be treated in Sussex, rather than being taken to London hospitals.

Dr Jonathan Andrews, consultant anaesthetist and clinical lead for the Sussex Major Trauma Centre said: “A huge amount of work went into making this move a success.

“Moving neurosurgery from Haywards Heath to the Major Trauma Centre in Brighton means we have all the expertise, experience and equipment major trauma patients need in one place.

“We can now treat the most seriously injured patients within Sussex instead of further afield.”

BSUH patients with fractured hips will now be taken directly to Princess Royal Hospital for surgery and rehabilitation and all urology inpatients will be treated at a specialist centre at the same site.

Lisa Leonard, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust said: “I am delighted that we have been able to create a dedicated service for people with a fractured neck of femur really focussed on their needs.

“The peaceful and spacious surroundings of the Princess Royal Hospital seem to me the best place to treat these patients, who are mostly over 80 years of age, and to help them to return to the level of health and wellbeing they had before their injury.”

Seven loads of hospital equipment were moved between the two hospital sites, carrying items ranging in scale from the tiny implants used in brain surgery to specialist operating tables.

A spokeswoman for BSUH said: “With careful preparation and planning, just eight patients needed to move site in order to make sure they are located with the specialist staff they need. These patients were moved in specially arranged ambulances.”

Hurstwood Park will open to ear nose and throat day surgery, oral surgery and breast surgery services in summer.
