The land in Williams Road is barely used at the moment but the community group Southlanders is looking to change that.

Money has already been raised for a Williams Road Village Green sign and now further fundraising is planned to provide a seat for people to rest on.

Southlanders chairman Ann Martin will undertake a two to three-hour walking trek through a National Park, on a date yet to be confirmed.

“Suffering from fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), this will be a huge challenge for me,” she said.

“We have a village green which is not used because it is just a patch of green. Our community group Southlanders raised money to have a sign put up, which in the process of being made.

“Now we would like to provide a seat for people to rest on. The local council cannot afford to give us one but are willing to do the work.

“A seat for Williams Road Village Green will cost in the region of £1,400. To date we have raised about £100, with half of that coming from people who live outside our area. The council have also said they will pay for the concrete plinth, so we are on the way.”

Last year, Ann completed a bike ride, which was due to take a couple of hours but ended up being most of the day due to her need for rest periods. The money raised was matched by Adur District Council to pay for the sign.

Ann added: “For the past couple of years, I have set myself a challenge to raise funds for Southlanders. The sponsored bike ride raised enough to go towards a new sign for the green and towards the running of our community café.”
