Youngsters get the chance to experience the outdoors, interact with others, gain confidence and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Working alongside youth members are thousands of adult volunteers, with a huge variety of roles. Marcus Jordan is a leader for the 1st Rustington Scouts. Here, he talks to the Herald and Gazette about his role as a Scout leader and the Scouts’ involvement with Worthing’s brand new leisure centre and pool, Splashpoint.

What made you become a scout leader?

I have always admired the Scouting Association and got a tremendous amount out of Scouting when I was a Scout and Venture Scout myself. It feels great to give something back to the community and keep myself active when not at work or with my family. To quote Chief Scout Bear Grylls: “Two things matter in life – following your dreams and looking after your friends. This is what I love about Scouting. It’s about doing great things, loving and enjoying the great adventures and helping others to do the same.”

What involvement have you had with Splashpoint Leisure Centre so far?

We have been very involved in Splashpoint over the last year. The management team has been very proactive and encouraging, and has brought in Scouts from all over the West Sussex district. “They even came to see us in person, on one of our Scout nights, to talk about fitness. While with us, we were asked what facilities we would like to see within Splashpoint Leisure Centre. Further down the line, the troop was invited to try out the new Splashpoint facilities prior to the official opening. It was very exciting to be involved in such a wonderful new project and all the children loved it.

What benefits do you feel Splashpoint will bring to you and the Scouts over the coming months?

We will certainly be back to Splashpoint again in the future and I am sure the Scouts will all be back if with their families and friends, if they haven’t been already. There are so many activities that we could be a part of – assault causes, aquajets, Waterwalkerz and more.
