Salvation Army praises residents for generous gifts of presents for the community

Generous residents have donated hundreds of parcels to the Salvation Army, which have been given to families in need across the Herald area this Christmas.

Gemma Archer, of the charity’s Welcome In Centre at Crescent Road, Worthing, expressed concerns over the fact the number of people asking for assistance has significantly increased since last year.

She said: “We’ve had 230 parcels that are going to homes in Worthing, Adur and Littlehampton and I think it makes a real difference to people.

“We see cases of those who have been made redundant and lost their jobs and have absolutely nothing. The numbers needing our help have doubled in the last year, which is sad, but it is good we are able to help.

“We’ve have had three volunteers from Comfort Keepers and students from Oak Grove College, who have all been great. I think people have been brilliant at donating presents and we’ve had everything from new £40 dolls to a wide range of second hand toys.

Darren Housden, of Comfort Keepers UK, praised the efforts of his team who helped out with sorting presents at the Salvation Army, which they did in addition to their regular care duties. The company recently set up a new office at Columbia Drive in Worthing.

Mr Housden said: “It’s great to see our team volunteering their time to help people in need. We hope to help even more in the future and continue contributing to the communities we serve.

“Our care workers really are our local heroes. They not only ensure that our clients are well-cared for, providing services such as washing, dressing and light housekeeping, but also ensure their day-to-day safety and well-being.”
