RNLI deals with hoax call and smoking vessel

The Shoreham RNLI team was initially called out on Thursday, July 21 to a report of a man who was in trouble after jumping off Worthing Pier.

The inshore lifeboat was launched first at 11.55pm after the coastguard received a 999 call to say a man who had gone off the pier had not come ashore. The all-weather lifeboat was also scrambled to help the inshore lifeboat.

They carried out an extensive hour-and-a-half search of the area with the mobile coastguard team and police. Nothing was found and the lifeboats were stood down. Enquiries then established that the report was a hoax call from a phone box.

On Friday, July 22 at 12.30pm, the all weather lifeboat was launched to a report of a vessel issuing smoke five miles south west of Shoreham. As the lifeboat proceeded to the scene, the crew on board the boat reported all was ok. The lifeboat was stood down.

Then at 9.30pm on Friday the all weather lifeboat was launched again to a 43ft yacht, which had broken down off the coast of Shoreham with five people on board. It had suffered engine failure and could not proceed into the locks.

The lifeboat towed the yacht through the locks along the canal and she was moored in the harbour.
