The Chanctonbury County Local Committee said it had proposed the idea ‘in the interests of road safety’.

West Sussex County Council will now carry out a formal consultation with residents of Upper Beeding to see if they would like to see the speed limit through the village reduced to 20mph.

The consultation period begins today and will run until March 23.

David Barling, West Sussex County councillor and member of Chanctonbury County Local Committee, said: “There are only three entrances to the village so this would have to be done as one complete zone rather than piecemeal roads.

“Very little, if any, engineering works will need to be done so we are mainly talking about signage on the three entrances to the village and roundels on roads.

“I believe the police will have no objection to the proposal.

“It is essential that as many residents as possible indicate whether they do or do not support such a proposal.”

If there are no objections a Traffic Regulation Order reducing the speed limit to 20mph will be made by West Sussex County Council quickly.

If there are more than five objections then the matter will be subject to an appraisal by highway officers who will send a report to the County Local Committee – the four local county councillors for Henfield, Storrington, Pulborough and Upper Beeding – who will then make a decision based on the residents’ opinions.

Mr Barling added: “Chanctonbury County Local Committee has worked closely with Upper Beeding Parish Council to introduce this speed limit who are also completely in favour of lowering it to 20mph.

“I have received a number of requests from residents asking for the speed restriction to be dropped to 20mph.

“This is in the interest of road safety.

“There is currently a 20mph speed restriction in Bramber right up until you reach Upper Beeding high street. As soon as you reach Upper Beeding, the speed limit becomes 30mph.

“The speed restriction will be self policed.”
