‘Remarkable’ 102-year-old celebrates

The centenarian, of Old Shoreham Road, Lancing, still plays the card game regularly at East Worthing Community Centre.

Her birthday was celebrated as part of the club’s annual dinner, which was held at the Windsor Hotel, Windsor Road, Worthing.

Secretary Jan Bassett said: “Grace is a life member of our bridge club and plays every Monday.”

Grace is also keen on keep fit and enjoys lunches at Shoreham Conservative Club, in High Street, Shoreham.

Born in Cambridgeshire, Grace moved to Harlesden, London, when she was married and had two sons, Basil and David, but later divorced and moved away.

Her father had died during the First World War and her mother brought up three children alone. During the Second World War, Grace was as a welder.

Carer Steve Wiesen said: “She is a very active lady with all of her marbles. She is remarkable and the things she has done in her lifetime, I wish that I could have done just one of them.

“She has been a ballet teacher, snooker champion, bowls ladies champion, horse owner and greyhound owner.”
