Recycling scheme trial unsuccessful

The Chanctonbury mobile recycling service, operating in Steyning, Henfield, Storrington and Pulborough, was launched last September.

It gave people the chance to drop off old, broken, or unwanted small electrical goods in their area on set days.

West Sussex county councillor David Barling told Steyning Parish Council last week the trial had proved unsuccessful because very few people had used the service, which stopped off in the car park by the Steyning Centre.

A similar trial in Selsey, however, had been popular, possibly because there was not a tip nearby.

Mr Barling said: “As far as Horsham is concerned, it has not been terribly successful. Most people take goods to the tip in Shoreham.

“It has been successful in Selsey because it doesn’t have its own tip.”

The scheme, run in partnership with Viridor, Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council, was unlikely to be continued, because the £20,000 cost could not be justified.

Mr Barling explained the experiment had been funded by the Government until the end of the year and after that, it would be up to the councils to provide the money if they wanted the service to carry on.

Parish councillor Roger Toms said he wasn’t aware of the service and suggested it had not been successful because nobody knew about it.
