Readers capture Pelican of London as it leaves Southwick

Having spent a few days in dry dock for repairs and work preparing for the annual service, the ship set sail for Weymouth, where it is based.

Readers have sent in pictures of the mainmast barquentine, the only one of its kind in the world, as it left the harbour.

David Tarr, of North Street, Shoreham, saw the training ship after it had been moved out of Adur Dry Dock in Southwick to an inner berth, before sailing for Weymouth at 7pm.

“The Pelican of London leaves Weymouth on March 30, bound for the Channel Islands, on a fully-booked Easter youth break,” he said.

Beryl Matthews, of Elm Grove, Lancing, managed to take some pictures in the fading light on Monday evening, as the Pelican of London left Shoreham, escorted by the Pilot boat.

“She returned to her home port of Weymouth overnight,” said Beryl.

“I was lucky enough to have a day on board last September – a wonderful experience. More details can be obtained from Adventure under Sail in Weymouth.”

Tall Ship Pelican, a non-profit organisation, thanked the Shoreham Herald for the short video of the Pelican in dry dock, published on Monday.
