Port's '˜masterplan' includes new waterfront for town

The waterfront has been described as having the ‘potential to be re-developed for commercial and leisure purposes’, and would include increased marina berths with associated facilities, a new ‘public hub’, extra parking, and improved access to the waterfront.

Shoreham Port also said the local authorities see Southwick Waterfront as one of the key areas in their plans for the regeneration of the wider Shoreham Harbour area.

The plan is proposed in the Shoreham Port Annual Report 2015, in which it also outlines the need to improve flood defences along the waterfront, and, as a result, funding has been given for new walls in the Adur River from the Government Growth Deal.

Tim Hague, Shoreham Port property manager, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to enhance Southwick’s historic waterfront and the well-established Lady Bee Marina. A marketing campaign in 2015 generated a good level of interest and we are currently in talks with a development partner.

“We hope to agree terms shortly and submit a planning application later this year.”

The location for the development is close to Southwick’s centre of Southwick Square, sits on the A259, and is adjacent to Southwick train station providing east and west links to Shoreham, Worthing and Brighton.

In a statement released by the port, a spokesman said: “The site is in need of rejuvenation and we intend that a proposed scheme will provide new commercial space for the business community, better marina facilities for leisure and boat users, and an improved waterfront with leisure attractions for the enjoyment of the local residents and to draw in visitors.

“This will be a development built to a high quality/design standard with a focus on sustainability in line with Shoreham Port’s Eco Port status.”

It is currently unknown when the works will go ahead, but a spokesman from Shoreham Port said talks are underway with developers.
