Polly good show!

MYSTERY continues to surround parrots flying wild in Steyning which have yet to be reported missing.

The two birds were first spotted in Shooting Field more than two weeks ago '“ and now appear to have moved closer to the Downs.

Herald reader Don Paver, of Portway, Steyning, took a series of pictures of the two birds, which were identified as orange-winged Amazon parrots by his wife Shirley.

She told the Herald: "I have loved parrots for a long time. I have had several over the years."

Shirley explained that when parrots were bred in captivity, the young birds were fitted with a leg ring which never came off and should remain unbroken.

"These rings have got a break in them," said Shirley. "It could mean they weren't bred in this country.

"It makes it that little bit more mysterious. They must belong to somebody."

The parrots have been spotted around Portway and also near Laines Road, Steyning, closer to the Downs and high trees. Crab apples remain their food of choice, although the trees are now beginning to lose their fruit.

Shirley urged people to put out food for the parrots, which enjoy things like apple, corn on the cob, and grapes.

She hoped food would encourage them to stay in the same place until their owners came forward.

"I don't think they are going to come down to bird tables. I have got lots of parrot seed, but I am at a loss for where to put it.

"I am afraid once the crab apples have gone, the birds will go as well," said Shirley.
