Planning permission has been granted to build a new café, toilets and play area at the Brighton Road park, boosting plans to turn the space into a science adventure park.

This is the latest step in a £3million project from Worthing Borough Council that was first announced at the end of 2018.

The council’s member for the environment, Edward Crouch, said: “I’m pleased we have now cleared another important hurdle so that we can build new toilets and a fantastic new cafe for Brooklands.

“Obviously lockdown has slowed down progress somewhat but we said we would revive this much-loved landmark into something everyone can be proud of again and that is exactly what we intend to do.”

The new café will sit inside a sustainably powered visitor hub, with indoor and outdoor seating.

An adventure play area will also house 30 pieces of equipment, including two climbing frames more than four metres high.

Creation of outdoor space for games and events is also set to begin, along with a contemplative garden bordering the Teville Stream and a new pathway surrounding the lake with seating areas and shelters.

A 2.5km fitness trail will be added, as well as a number of glades on the old golf course, including some named play and build, community garden, nature, wind and winter and discreet areas sheltered by planting for community activities such as food growing, seed sowing, play dens, bug hotels and bird boxes.

Brooklands lake will have windmill oxygenators installed and a mount will be placed on the highest point in the park.

The next step is for council officers to begin the technical designs alongside architect Turkington Martin, before construction work goes out to tender before the end of the year.

The unveiling of Brooklands Park’s new masterplan has not been without controversy, with many residents saddened by the loss of favourite attractions such as the miniature railway and go-karts.
