Dr James Walsh has been in charge of the opposition for eight years but there is no news yet about who his replacement will be.

Dr Walsh, who is also leader of Arun District Council, said he would be standing again in his Littlehampton East ward in May but if re-elected this would be his last term.

He added: “I have chosen to stand down as I have been leader of the opposition for eight years, and it is time for new blood.

“We have put ourselves into a strong challenging position after the pretty disastrous last eight years of Tory rule.”

The Liberal Democrats hold eight seats on the council compared to the Conservatives’ 51.
