Members have used shared journeys for work, university, festivals, football matches, shopping, and visiting friends.

Meanwhile car clubs in Horsham and Chichester, run in partnership with community interest company Co-Wheels, allow the public to hire cars from on-street locations from £4.50 an hour and 13p per mile.

West Sussex County Council is promoting both schemes as part of European Mobility Week.

John O’Brien, WSCC’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Traffic congestion is estimated to cost every business in West Sussex £29,000 a year.

“So innovative ideas such as the car share and car club schemes are something we’d love to see as many people as possible take up to help our busy roads, if unable to use public transport.

“If you are interested, and want to save yourself money on travel, please take a look at the websites to find out more.”
