Police to visit scene of Durrington rape for further appeal

Police investigating the rape of a woman in Durrington are to visit the scene a week after the attack to try to find fresh witnesses.

Officers said they will revisit Whitebeam Woods in Durrington at 10.30pm tonight (Friday, June 19) to speak to residents and people passing through the area in case they have information that could help with the inquiry.

Officers were called shortly before 12.25am on Saturday, June 13 after the 25-year-old victim was attacked as she was walking on a footpath through the woods that leads from Holly Close to Whitebeam Road. The woman was assaulted while she was close to the basketball court that is opposite the junction of Romany Road and Walnut Tree Way.

The attacker forced the woman to the ground and raped her.

The rapist would have had to leave the woods via one of a number of footpaths that emerge between the houses in the area and officers are keen to speak to anyone that was in the area and who saw or heard anything suspicious between 11.30pm on Friday, June 12 and 12.30am on Saturday, June 13.

They are also looking for any CCTV that could have captured the attacker entering the woods or leaving after the attack.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Rymarz, from Sussex and Surrey major crime team, said: “Officers will be at Whitebeam Road and at the entrances to the woods from 10.30pm to 12.30am speaking to anyone they meet in the area.

“We need the help of the local community to identify and trace the offender so they can be arrested.

“Although we have visited many of the homes close to where the attack happened, there could be people who were in the area at the time but who do not live there. We are hoping that we could find people tonight who might use the roads in the area but who we have not yet spoken to.
