MOVING stories of lost loved ones and strong survivors spurred runners in this year’s Race for Life.

Worthing’s promenade was transformed into a sea of pink as 3,246 women took part in the 5K Cancer Research UK event on Sunday (July 9).

Organisers said it looks like their £173,000 target will be smashed as participants pledged to raise a massive £249,508.

The race started at 11am, with participants gathering at Steyne Gardens before making their way to the start line on the seafront near the Pavilion Theatre.

The participants then ran, jogged, skipped or walked to just before George V Avenue before making their way back.

First in was 12-year-old Rose Ellis, from Chichester, who did the course in just under 21 minutes.

The event is well known for its pink theme and this year was no exception.

The promenade was a sea of pink as women dressed up as clowns, fairies, women with bunny ears, and just those who kept it simple and wore running gear.

People of all ages took part while walking with children’s pushchairs, on crutches, in wheelchairs, and walking dogs.

Lynsey Bartlett from Heart Breakfast hosted the event, which has been sponsored by Tesco for the last 10 years.

So far, £43,992 of sponsorship money has already been collected.
