PICTURES: WI unveils plaque on pier
Members of Worthing's Women's Institute gathered at the pier to unveil a commemorative plaque.
The glass panel, made by artist Siobhan Jones of The Forge, Worthing, was commissioned and funded by the Worthing branch and marks its 100th anniversary.
Christine Hodges, president of the Worthing WI, said: “We thought it would be a lovely idea.
“We set about raising some funds and ran a cake stall in Worthing market last September and held an auction in January of unwanted Christmas presents.
“Members were asked to come up with ideas for the design of our panel and one member, Gerri, produced the idea of beach huts to represent Worthing and bunting to represent the WI.”
The design incorporated the institute’s activities on the beach huts – campaigning, cooking, education, fun and crafts – ‘Worthing WI’ on the bunting and the institute’s logo on the corner beach hut.
On the banner at the top of the panel it has the dates of the centennial with the words ‘over 100 years of fun and friendship’ written on it.
This is part of an ongoing project which sees groups and organisations contributing glass panels to the pier.
