PICTURES: St Barnabas House Night to Remember midnight walk

They were taking part in the fourth St Barnabas House Night to Remember midnight walk, to raise money for the Durrington-based hospice, and have so far collected an impressive total of £120,000.

Starting at midnight on Saturday, almost 1,000 women started at Worthing Leisure Centre and did the half- marathon through the town.

As always, many of the participants were walking in memory of loved ones.

Les’s Ladies were remembering Les Rogers, who was cared for at St Barnabas and died in 2010.

Sisters Julie and Debbie were doing the walk in memory of their mum, Margaret Ann Knight, who died last month at St Barnabas, accompanied by grand-daughter Ellen and daughter-in-law Andrea.

And there were plenty of groups taking part, too, including Morrisons, Idexxies Midnight Runners, walking in memory of Andee Young, Davison High School for Girls, The Angmering School, the St Barnabas China Trekkers, Long Acre Nursing Home and Worthing Hospital Community Midwives.

New for this year was the memory wall, where the women could leave messages and photos of their loved ones.

There was also an auction for the services of the Buff Builders, who will fix the winner’s house over a day.

Joanna Carden, event organiser, said: “It was a fantastic sight to see so many ladies in their pink Night to Remember t-shirts walking through the night and raising such an amazing amount for St Barnabas.

“Since we moved into our brand-new hospice, we have been caring for even more patients and their families.

“This money represents the cost of running not one, but two of our wings – each having four en-suite patient rooms, an assisted bathroom and a communal lounge – for just over a month.

“We would like to say a huge thank-you from everyone at St Barnabas to all our wonderful women walkers, as well as our hundred volunteers, REAC and SECAM for keeping our ladies safe and, of course, Worthing Leisure Centre and Splash FM, without whose help this event would not be possible.”
