PICTURES: Shoreham in-laws complete gruelling quadrathlon

Climbing over a Munro sounds like an odd challenge.

But a brother and sister in-law from Shoreham climbed seven of them for charity in a gruelling quadrathlon.

Beth Parry-Evans and Euan Carmichael walked 15 miles over the Munros – Scottish mountains more than 3,000 feet tall – as part of The Artemis Great Kindrochit Quadrathlon on Saturday.

They took part to raise money for global community organisation Mercy Corps and international school food charity Mary’s Meals.

As part of the challenge, held in Loch Tay, Scotland, the pair had to climb the mountains, swim 0.8 miles across open water and kayak seven miles before finishing off with a 34-mile bike ride.

Beth and Euan endured torrentail rain, misty and foggy conditions and a broken bike chain to complete the quadrathlon in 14 hours, 50 minutes, shaving 40 minutes off their previous time last year.

While disappointed to have missed their 14 hour target, Beth said ‘it was quite an achievement’ given the circumstances.

Just 1km before the end of the course, Euan’s bike chain broke – so the pair borrowed a bike cord from a passerby and Beth towed them across the finish line.

She said: “It was pretty tiring; there were a few setbacks on the way but it was good we completed it.”

Beth said that the weather was both a blessing and a curse when it came to the mountain section of the quadrathlon: “The weather was awful; it was pretty much raining the whole time. The summits of all the Munros were covered in fog and mist so it took more time to navigate around. But sometimes it helped that we couldn’t see the tops so we couldn’t see the pain that was coming out of the mist!”

Competing under the team name 40 Not Out!, Beth, 40, and Euan, 41, decided to compete to celebrate their birthday milestone. “Euan’s daughter was born during our training for the 2015 quad so it was quite tough to fit training in around looking after a new-born baby.”

According to their fundraising page, Beth and Euan have raised £790 for their two charities.

Mary’s Meals provides daily meals in school to more than 1.1 million children in 12 developing countries.

Working in over 40 countries, Mercy Corps partners with communities to help strengthen them. Most recently it has supported those affected by the Syrian refugee crisis.
