PICTURES: Families get creative at Steyning museum art event

For ten years the museum has held the creative session which gives members of the public a chance to explore the museum and create their own artwork.

Jacquie Buttriss, vice chair of the museum, said: “There was a lovely atmosphere and lots of enthusiasm.

“Lots of families came in from Steyning and the surrounding areas with young children. It was lovely to see.

“Parents told me it was great to get their kids away from the television and computer for the day and get messy – without having to clear up afterwards!”

The museum’s Penfold Hall was filled with a variety of different art materials for people to experiment with.

Creations included paintings, collages and prints.

“Most people stayed for hours, it was always full and busy,” she said.

The theme of this year’s event was Steyning glass.

“Steyning has lots of buildings with interesting windows and the museum’s collection has glass bottles from the last three or four hundred years,” she explained.

Before making their own work, visitors browsed photos of windows in the village and sketched bottles and other glass objects in the museum.

There was even an early fire extinguisher, made from blue glass, for people to take inspiration from.

The various artworks were displayed in the hall throughout the afternoon and will now be put together to form a community artwork, which will be displayed in the foyer.

The group of volunteers who helped Mrs Buttriss on the day ‘thoroughly enjoyed it’, she said.

“I’d like to thank all the helpers- they were marvellous,” she said. “They have all helped people to do things they’ve never done before.”
