The incident occured this morning on the corner of Courtwick Road and Wick Street, where the driver attempted to park on brickwork.

But the rear left-hand wheel fell through a manhole cover, causing the right-hand side of the vehicle to be raised off the ground.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “At about 10.23am on Wednesday (8 June), police received a report of a lorry stuck on the A284 Wick Street, Littlehampton.

“On arrival, officers discovered one of the wheels had fallen through a manhole cover and the vehicle was blocking the pavement; not the road.

“The local authority was notified and the scene was made safe, and the vehicle was recovered about three hours later.

“BT was also notified in relation to damage caused to the cover.”

A spokesperson from West Sussex Highways said at the time of the incident that a team was on standby to make the paving safe as soon as they could.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said crews did not attend the scene.
