A Worthing man known as the Burpee Guy said he learned ‘a lot about myself’ in his attempt to break two world records on Saturday.

Craig Peters from Westland Avenue managed more than 6,000 of the squat thrust exercises at Ultimate U Fitness in Woodside Road, Worthing, before ending the event early at 4.15am on Sunday morning due to exhaustion.

In an open letter, he said: “Rather than my mind saying stop, my body said ‘enough is enough’. I quite literally had nothing left to give. Perhaps I had gone off too fast, who knows. But I reached my limit and I learned a hell of a lot about myself in the process.”

The records for the most burpees completed in 12 and 24 hours still stand at 6,800 and 10,110.

Craig’s campaign has seen him raise £15,000 for St George’s Hospital in London, which saved the lives of his identical twin boys after they were diagnosed with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

He said: “What a difference this is going to make to so many lives and I think we can now safely say we have put twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome firmly on the radar. That’s what this game has been all about from day one.”

The syndrome occurs in about ten per cent of multiple pregnancies and means that one twin gets too much blood from the placenta and the other gets too little, affecting their growth and survival.
