‘We love Shoreham, but...’ – results of town survey are revealed

But some residents, particularly new ones and people from minority backgrounds, do not share that sense of belonging.

The society said it’s committee was exploring ways to make them feel more welcome.

Gerard Rosenberg, chairman of the Society said, “We have just concluded our 2020 Survey across the community, not just our members.

“It was one of the largest, most comprehensive surveys of its kind ever undertaken locally and the level of participation and passion shown exceeded all expectations.

“The subsequent report includes valuable insights and useful suggestions to help guide the Shoreham Society next year as we, hopefully, emerge from the difficulties that we have all been experiencing in recent times.

“It’s inspiring to see that so many people are passionate about Shoreham – preserving, improving and cherishing it.”

The widely-publicised postal and on-line survey attracted 668 responses from throughout the town, with 2,700 individual comments about what people like – and do not like – about living in Shoreham.

Although most residents indicated a generally high level of satisfaction, several recurring concerns emerged, which the Shoreham Society says it will use to set future priorities and activities.

Among the main concerns raised were traffic problems, environmental issues – including air pollution, and a lack of influence over planning decisions.

Many respondents also felt the town’s commercial centre needed an uplift with a better range of shops, improved access and a more welcoming physical environment.
