The mural at the end of Gordon Road was painted over three days during the bank holiday weekend by artist and environmentalist Jane Mutiny.

It features an orangutan with a human hand reaching out towards it – along with the slogan ‘it’s not too late’ and ‘act now’.

Jane said it had a ‘positive message’.

Kathy Kohl, a member of Extinction Rebellion’s Worthing branch who lives in the road, said: “I think it’s beautiful.

“I’m so proud that Extinction Rebellion’s first life-scale mural is in our street.”

She said the people who own the wall had been looking for someone to paint a mural on it for some time, as it often got covered in ‘not very nice graffiti’.

“When the opportunity came up, they grabbed it,” she said.

She added: “Extinction Rebellion aims to tell the truth about the effects of climate change, and hold our leaders to the pledges made as part of the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

“It is depressing to see how slow progress has been, but people often tend to become numb to bad news and urgent pleas, so this mural has a message of hope, some optimism that (if we act now) it is not too late to save endangered species such as orangutans, as well as coastal regions and our beautiful sealife.”

Over the weekend, Exinction Rebellion members in Worthing also held a demonstration outside of Barclays bank.
