Yesterday (April 24), marked 20 years since his death and a service was held at his memorial in Brighton Road, Shoreham, where the tragic incident happened.

Matt Webb, chairman of the Sussex Police Federation, said: “We are constantly reminded of the dangers officers face while on duty. These reminders often cause us to think of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting their communities.

“We specifically remember them on the anniversary of either their death or the event that lead to them losing their lives.

“This year on the 20th anniversary of PC Tooley’s death it seemed very appropriate that we do something more than normal.

“With the wishes of his mother and family uppermost in our thoughts a short ceremony was arranged at the memorial site where a wreath was laid by Assistant Chief Constable Steve Barry on behalf of the force.

“Sussex Police Federation would like to acknowledge the continued dignity of the Tooley family and would like to thank the work of Chief Inspector Andy Gooch for bringing the initial idea to a reality.

Police officers consider their colleagues an extended family and when one falls we all stumble a little. Colleagues, such as PC Jeff Tooley, who are killed in the line of duty will always be remembered.”
