Overwhelming support for subway effort

The Shoreham Society met with Network Rail in London last Tuesday to again press for the opening up of the railway station subway for all pedestrians.

Members, backed by East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton, want it to go back to the way it was originally built, to help people cross the line when the level crossing gates are down.

Adrian Towler, who started the campaign, said: “The main aim of the get-together was to agree on a professional survey to see what would be possible and getting plans drawn up so that the cost of the work can be estimated.

“Southern Railway representatives were also at the meeting. They have suggested adapting the station buildings to let pedestrians through, but it would still be a long walk compared to how the subway was originally designed.”

Chairman Gerard Rosenberg, who helped man a survey at the station in November, said thanked all those who completed the subway questionnaire cards.

“All 843 replies have been collated and although there was a handful of objections to Southern Railway’s scheme, the overwhelming majority of passengers wanted the subway open again,” he said.

“There were also useful comments, and many people asked why it could not be open direct to the street again – as it once was.”
