All this disagreeable reader comment on your Facebook page and elsewhere in connection with the cycle lane could have been avoided had the cyclist felt safer on the roads.

Even some of us who have been cycling since the 50s get a bit nervous with speeding traffic only inches away.

The Worthing 20mph campaign some years ago would have made a notable contribution to achieving that safer environment had it been approved in the consultation. The 20mph limit would also encourage more cycling, something we all want for health reasons as well traffic reduction.

Clearly, whatever the outcome of the cycle lane one thing is clear. Like it or not vehicles are responsible for over 25 per cent of emissions causing global heating.

The sooner we eliminate this danger to the planet the better. To continue business as usual, governments will be forced to bring in measures far more unpopular than a cycle lane.
