Worthing Borough Council '˜pays lip service to young people'

On Monday, October 17, I had the privilege of attending a meeting of the Adur & Worthing Youth Council.

These young people are passionate, caring and incredibly articulate.

They are led by an impressive young lady, Katie Walters and supported by a dedicated volunteer, Shirley Robinson-Viney who is retiring this Christmas after 20 years’ service.

Sadly, the council have known about Shirley’s departure for two years and have done less than the bare minimum in trying to fill her position.

After Christmas the Youth Council may have to disband leaving thousands of young people without a voice.

The council make bold gestures when it comes to young people in the borough but there’s zero substance behind it all; the majority of our councillors dismiss their views and have put the Youth Council on the back burner. To all elected representatives, you forget about younger residents at your peril, they aren’t young forever and will one day decide to punish you at the ballot box.
