Van parking causing Littlehampton verge mayhem

Many grass verges in Littlehampton are being used as car parking spaces, resulting in deep mud filled ridges making the area looking a real eye sore.

Southfields Road and East Street are particularly noticeable. Delivery vans park half on the road and half on the verges leaving deep mud filled ruts when they drive off.

This behaviour by motorists also results in mud being transferred to pavements making them slippery and a danger to pedestrians.

We have spoken to the council to ask to have markers, which we are willing to pay for, outside our property to stop this happening, but have been told that the ridges left by vehicles are not deep enough to warrant them.

Presumably these verges are owned by the council and it is up to them to check on damage being done and to take action. Many grass verges now resemble muddy bogs and are making the area look neglected and messy. We have also noticed that many side roads in Littlehampton are being used as free parking for local firms’ white vans.

Fitzalan Road seems to be a favourite and we counted six vans from the same firm parked along this road, which do not move for days on end.

In our opinion more verge markers are required, to enhance the area, to stop verges being turned into a muddy mess and side roads being used as free car parking for local firms using parking space for local residents who do not have alternative parking arrangements.
